Why Are So Many Pregnant Women Dying In Hospitals in the U.S.?

According to an investigation from USA TODAY, thousands of women suffer life-altering injuries or die during childbirth each year due to hospitals and medical staff failing to use safety practices that can prevent catastrophe.

In fact, basic procedures like weighing bloody pads to track blood loss to detect early signs of danger and giving medication within an hour of spotting dangerously high blood pressure to prevent strokes are being neglected by doctors and nurses across the country.

While the majority of American women give birth without major incident, more than 50,000 sustained serious injuries during childbirth each year. 700 pregnant women die each year due to childbirth complications, and even the best estimates suggest that half of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented had doctors and nurses provided better care for patients.

Sadly, the United States has fallen behind other countries and is now the most dangerous place in the developed world for women to give birth. This lack of attention occurs throughout the country, from large, fully staffed hospitals to tiny community delivery units.

Dr. Steven Clark, a leading childbirth safety expert and a professor at Baylor College of Medicine says, “Our medicine is run by cowboys today, where everyone is riding the range doing whatever they’re wanting to do. It’s a failure at all levels, at national organization levels and at the local hospital leadership levels as well.”
